Murthy To Co-chair WEF-China Summit

The good cheer from China is spreading. Infosys Technologies chairman and chief mentor NR Narayana Murthy has been nominated to co-chair the 22nd ‘China Business Summit -2003’ on November 6-7, to be organised by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in cooperation with the United Nations Conference on Trade & Development and World Trade Organisation. Mr Murthy is the first Indian to co-chair this mega Chinese business event.

Seeing the importance of the two emerging economies of India and China, the organisers have also planned an interactive session on India. The focus of the session, “China and India: Leveraging strength for partnership,” is on the potential of bilateral cooperation. The session will try to answer in particular how the Asian giants can learn from one another’s experiences? It will also identify potential fields for co-operation, besides discussing whether economics can lead politics in Indo-China relations.

Commenting on Mr Murthy’s nomination, India Brand Equity Fund CEO and CII deputy director-general Ajay Khanna said, “this is a reflection of changing relationship between India and China. It also recognises the global contribution of the Indian business community in the field of IT.” The CII is the Indian partner of WEF. Mr Murthy will share the dias with global business leaders like PricewaterhouseCoopers global CEO Samuel A DiPiazza Jr, Itochu Corporation chairman Minoru Murofushi, Qin Xiao of the Hong Kong-based China Merchants Holdings, China Unicom chairman and CEO Yang Xianzu, and Bank of Communications-China cha-irman Yin Jieyan.

The 21st China Business Summit was co-chaired by Industrial & Commercial Bank of China president Jiang Jianqing, Vincent HS Lo of Shui On Holdings, and China Netcom Corporation president and CEO Edward S Tian.

Originally scheduled for April 14-15, the summit was postponed to November 6-7 due to the SARS epidemic. “The programme of the summit will, however, retain many of the same structures and themes, but will be updated to account for new international and domestic developments,” WEF said in a communique. The theme of the summit is, ‘China under new leadership: The new dynamics of trade and development.’

Core discussions will focus on leadership transition and the impact on the business environment reviewing China’s accession to WTO and the ongoing transformations in key industries, including IT and telecommunications, manufacturing and consumer markets distribution.
